Heir to Rice
Bronze, Brass & Fiber, 20″x16″x16″
“Heir to Rice” implies a presence to honor my heritage, the sacredness of rice, agricultural work and my family. My grandparents used caribou in the rice paddies which have passed onto my cousins. I imagined either of my grandparents wearing the hat while I created the piece: telling of memory, of tradition, generational layers and the complexity of cultures through the multilayered, multimedia, multi-techniques ( casting, forging, welding, weaving ) wornout hat transformed into sculpture. The precocious balance of the sculpture with the weight on one small point is my own struggle as part of the high-tech, fast-paced modern world to not leave my roots behind.
